BREAKING: Hunter Biden To Be Investigated By Special Counsel, Judge Confirms
Special council with additional powers will now oversee an investigation into Hunter Biden, the son of American President Jo Biden.
U.S. Attorney David Weiss will be appointed special counsel in the ongoing probe of the president’s son Hunter Biden, Attorney General Merrick Garland announced.
Weiss will be head of the “ongoing investigation, as well as for any other matters that arose or may arise from that investigation,” the Justice Department said in a statement today. Weiss, who was already overseeing the Biden probe, asked to be appointed special counsel on Tuesday, with Garland agreeing that it was “in the public interest”.
Weiss was nominated by former President Donald Trump in 2017 and confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate in 2018.
Garland said the appointment “reinforces for the American people the Department’s commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters.”
The announcement came moments before prosecutors said in a court filing that plea negotiations with Hunter Biden’s team on tax charges brought by Weiss’s office had fallen apart and that the case is now heading towards a trial.
Previously, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to three federal crimes as part of a plea agreement with the Justice Department to resolve tax and gun charges, including lying that he was not a drug user at the time of purchasing a gun.
In 2018, Biden, 53, was charged with illegally possessing a handgun after he admitted to using drugs at the time he bought the firearm.
