As Ukrainian forces continue to advance in the east, more than two dozen Russian soldiers were mistakenly shot dead by their own military as they retreated from land near the Donetsk airport.

According to Kyiv MP Yuriy Mysiagin, as a result of Ukraine’s ongoing counter-offensive, the Russian troops were retreating to new positions in a ‘panicked manner’ when they were fired upon by their own comrades, reports Mail Online.

The Russian soldiers, assuming the men were enemy soldiers, unleashed artillery fire on them, inflicting a significant number of casualties and the loss of several pieces of equipment.

“Approximately half of the wounded had their arms or legs blown off,” Mysiagin claimed.

“For some unknown reason, the enemy artillery began to fire, not near the front line or behind Ukrainian positions in order to suppress our firepower, but on the positions and rear of this unit,” a Ukrainian colonel wrote on Facebook about the incident in Donetsk.

The Russian side had suffered significant casualties and loss of equipment, while Ukrainian troops were able to fortify some areas, the General Staff of Ukraine’s armed forces said in a morning report.

“In the course of assault operations, they seized Andriivka in Donetsk region,” the General Staff said.

The General Staff also reported “partial success” near Klishchiivka village, south of Bakhmut.

In his evening address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian forces “will run” if Ukraine can drive home its counteroffensive.

Earlier in the week, Ukraine recaptured oil and gas drilling platforms in the Black Sea, occupied by Russia since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. The Boika Towers were used by Russia as landing pads for military helicopters.
