A senior Conservative MP has been arrested over an allegation of rape, The Sun has revealed.
The prominent politician – whom the newspaper says it is not naming for legal reasons – has also been questioned on suspicion of possession of controlled substances.
The Conservative MP becomes the third to be engulfed in scandal in recent months, with another Tory MP currently on bail over sexual assault allegations which he denies.
Contributing to the headache undoubtedly felt by Rishi Sunak right now is a scandal relating to MP Peter Bone, who has been banned for six-weeks from the House of Commons, after a panel ruled that allegations of bullying and sexual misconduct were true.
The Conservative MP, now sitting as an independent, has staunchly denied the allegations and ruling, and faces a recall petition. If the petition is successful, and 10% of voters in his constituency sign it, a by-election will be called.
A report by parliament’s Independent Expert Panel (IEP) found that Peter Bone exposed himself to a member of staff in a “deliberate and conscious abuse of power”.
Some have criticised the ruling, citing an apparent absence of evidence against the MP.
Former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher was also removed from office last week after The Sun revealed he had allegedly groped someone in a Tory private members club.
The new arrest has nothing to do with either Mr Bone, Mr Pincher, nor the other unidentified MP, The Sun has confirmed.
A Surrey police spokesman said: “We can confirm a man was arrested yesterday morning (25 October) on suspicion of rape and possession of controlled substances.
“He has been released on conditional police bail pending further enquiries.”
